Outsourced SDR vs In-House vs Agency

Compare outsourced SDR, in-house SDR and outbound agency for UK B2B. Costs from public sources, trade-offs and questions to ask. No meeting guarantees.

In-house, outsourced or managed? Three ways to run UK B2B outbound.

Direct answer: An in-house SDR is an employee you hire and manage. An outsourced SDR is a named or team-based resource operated by a provider. An outbound agency (or managed outbound engine) runs prospecting as a service across research, messaging and outreach. UK public cost guides put year-one in-house all-in costs roughly in the mid tens of thousands of pounds, and outsourced retainers commonly in the low-to-mid thousands per month depending on scope. No model guarantees meetings, leads or revenue. Elevate's Outbound Sales Engine is a managed service with a configuration fee plus monthly management, a three-month minimum, then rolling monthly.

Why this comparison matters now

UK B2B teams often compare three options that sound similar on a sales call but behave differently in practice:

  1. Hire an SDR.
  2. Buy an outsourced SDR seat or team.
  3. Buy a managed outbound programme from an agency or specialist engine.

The wrong choice usually comes from comparing a salary to a monthly fee without including recruitment, tools, ramp time, management load or what you can actually see in the work. A wider view of what AI changes, and what it does not, is in AI lead generation in the UK.

What do published UK cost ranges say?

These figures are from public guides, not Elevate prices. Elevate does not publish OSE rates on the website.

In-house SDR (year one)

JumpLead estimates about £55,000 to £60,000 in year one once commission, employer National Insurance, pension, recruitment and tools are included, or roughly £4,600 to £5,000 a month (JumpLead, updated 30 October 2026). Flowd cites a higher all-in band of about £62,000 to £85,000 for year one on a higher pay assumption (Flowd). Ramp time is often around three months before full productivity (Flowd citing The Bridge Group).

Outsourced SDR / outbound retainers

Public UK ranges commonly cited include:

  • About £2,000 to £8,000 a month per SDR equivalent (SendIQ figures summarised by JumpLead).
  • Team retainers often discussed around £3,000 to £10,000+ a month (Flowd summary of UK pricing guides).
  • Dedicated seats often discussed around £2,500 to £5,000 a month (Flowd).

Set-up fees, data charges, tool pass-throughs and contract minimums can sit outside the headline monthly number. Always ask.

Elevate's commercial shape (no prices)

OSE has an initial configuration fee and an ongoing monthly service fee, with a binding three-month initial term from the commencement date in the signed proposal, then rolling monthly. Elevate's pricing page and OSE page explain the model. Meetings and revenue are not promised.

What each model is really buying

In-house SDR

You buy employment capacity and, if managed well, institutional knowledge. You also buy recruitment risk, coaching load and a single point of failure when that person is off or leaves.

Outsourced SDR

You buy capacity without employment. Quality depends on briefing, ICP clarity, coaching from the provider and whether you see the work. A named seat can still be a single point of failure if cover is weak.

Outbound agency / managed engine

You buy a process: sourcing, verification, research, messaging, sending discipline, reply handling and reporting. Elevate's OSE is in this category: personalised email and/or LinkedIn outreach, human approval of batches, portal visibility and optional HubSpot sync. Your team still owns sales conversations.

Questions that prevent expensive mistakes

Ask every provider (and ask yourself, before hiring):

  1. What counts as a qualified conversation or meeting, in writing?
  2. What will we see: lists, messages, replies, or only a summary count?
  3. Who approves messaging before it sends?
  4. What is included in the monthly fee versus charged separately?
  5. What is the minimum term and notice period?
  6. How are out-of-office and non-genuine replies handled in reporting?
  7. Who owns prospect data when the engagement ends?
  8. How do you avoid implying guaranteed meetings or revenue?

Elevate's OSE responsibilities PDF and service terms are designed to make those boundaries explicit. Results still depend on market, proposition, data and how your team follows up. Record quality before any send is a separate question: the anonymised outbound data-quality case study is a review of prospect records, not a sales result.

How to read case studies without treating them as promises

Elevate's published outbound examples distinguish process from outcomes:

  • The videography outbound case study reports contacts reached, people replying and meetings booked for one two-week campaign, with clear caveats that meetings booked are not attended meetings, projects or revenue.
  • The French market outbound case study describes a delivered multi-audience workflow without claiming a sales total.

Use case studies as evidence of method and measurement discipline. Do not treat any single campaign as a forecast for your business.

When in-house is the better long-term bet

Consider hiring when:

  • outbound is core to the business for years, not a test,
  • product complexity needs deep internal knowledge,
  • you have a proven playbook and time to coach,
  • you can absorb recruitment and ramp cost.

Until those conditions are true, a managed or outsourced model is often the lower-risk way to learn what messaging and audiences respond.

When a managed outbound engine fits better than a lone SDR

A managed engine is often a better fit when you need:

  • research and personalisation at volume,
  • human review before sending,
  • multi-channel coordination (email and LinkedIn),
  • a shared view of replies for your sales team,
  • less dependence on one hire.

That is the design intent of Elevate's Outbound Sales Engine. It is still not a package of guaranteed appointments.

FAQ

What does an appointment setting agency do?

It focuses on booking meetings for your team. Definitions of "qualified" vary widely. Ask for the written qualification rules and whether no-shows are counted.

Is outsourced SDR cheaper than hiring?

Often in year one on a pure cash basis, according to public UK cost comparisons such as JumpLead and Flowd, but only if you compare like for like scope and include recruitment, tools and ramp. Cheaper is not the same as effective.

What is the difference between a lead generation agency and an SDR service?

Labels overlap. Some agencies sell meetings. Some sell pipeline programmes. Some sell managed outbound operations. Compare deliverables, channels, visibility and commercial terms, not the label alone.

Does Elevate AI guarantee meetings?

No. OSE does not price per meeting or promise a number of meetings or sales. That position is stated on the live OSE and pricing pages.

How long is Elevate's OSE commitment?

Three months from the service commencement date in the signed proposal, then rolling monthly with notice terms as set out in the agreement.
